Holding GNO in Gnosis App

Learn all the advantage of holding the Gnosis Token (GNO) within your Gnosis App.

Holding GNO in Gnosis App can increase your Gnosis Card reward rate and your weekly card reward cap. This guide explains how GNO affects card rewards, when your GNO balance starts counting, and what to keep in mind before adding or moving GNO.

Before you start

GNO is the Gnosis token. It has two main roles across the Gnosis ecosystem:

  • Governance: GNO holders can participate in GnosisDAO governance.

  • Staking: GNO is used to help secure Gnosis Chain through Proof-of-Stake.

In Gnosis App, your GNO balance can be used as part of the card reward calculation.

To benefit from GNO-based card rewards, you need:

  • a Gnosis App account

  • an active Gnosis Card connected to your account

  • eligible card transactions

  • GNO held in your Gnosis App wallet

GNO is a crypto asset. Its market price can change, and holding GNO does not guarantee profit or a fixed financial return.

What is GNO used for?

GNO is used differently depending on where you use it.

Across the broader Gnosis ecosystem, GNO is used for:

  • participating in GnosisDAO governance

  • voting on GnosisDAO proposals

  • staking to help secure Gnosis Chain

  • aligning long-term incentives across the Gnosis ecosystem

Inside Gnosis App, GNO is currently used mainly for:

  • increasing your Gnosis Card reward rate

  • increasing your weekly card reward cap

  • improving the value you may receive from eligible card spending

GNO is not used to pay normal transaction fees on Gnosis Chain. Transaction fees on Gnosis Chain are paid with xDAI.

Why hold GNO in Gnosis App?

Holding GNO can increase the amount of gCRC you may receive from eligible Gnosis Card spendings.

Gnosis App card rewards are paid in gCRC. Your GNO balance can affect:

  • your card reward rate

  • your weekly reward cap

  • the maximum amount of gCRC you can receive from eligible card spending

The more GNO you hold, the higher your card reward level can be, up to the maximum reward cap.

Why you cannot vote directly from Gnosis App

Gnosis App is designed as an onchain money app for everyday use, including self-custody, card payments, Circles, swaps, and account features.

GnosisDAO governance voting is a separate ecosystem process. It requires connecting a wallet to Snapshot, the governance platform, and signing a voting message.

At the moment, Gnosis App does not provide a native in-app governance voting experience. This does not mean GNO has no governance purpose. It means governance voting is handled outside the Gnosis App interface.

Why you cannot hold GNO in Gnosis App and stake the same GNO at the same time

The same GNO cannot be both freely held in your Gnosis App wallet and directly staked as validator collateral at the same time.

If GNO is sitting in your Gnosis App wallet, it can only count toward eligible Gnosis App card reward calculations.

If GNO is staked, it is being used to help secure Gnosis Chain. Staked GNO is not simply sitting as an available wallet balance in Gnosis App.

This is why holding GNO for Gnosis App card rewards and staking GNO are two different uses of the token.

How GNO affects your card reward rate?

Your GNO balance can increase the amount of gCRC you receive for every EUR spent with your Gnosis Card. The current card reward levels are:

GNO held

Card reward rate

Weekly reward cap

0 GNO

1 gCRC per EUR spent

1,000 gCRC

0.1 GNO or more

2 gCRC per EUR spent

2,000 gCRC

1 GNO or more

3 gCRC per EUR spent

3,000 gCRC

10 GNO or more

4 gCRC per EUR spent

4,000 gCRC

These rewards apply only to eligible card transactions. Transactions that are pending, refunded, reversed, disputed, or not eligible for card rewards may not count.

What the weekly cap means?

Your weekly cap is the maximum amount of gCRC you can receive from card rewards during a reward week.

For example, if your weekly cap is 2,000 gCRC, your eligible card rewards for that week cannot exceed 2,000 gCRC, even if your spending would otherwise generate more. Your weekly cap can increase when your eligible GNO balance reaches a higher reward level.

When your GNO starts counting?

GNO holdings are evaluated through weekly balance snapshots. If you add GNO to your Gnosis App wallet, it may not affect your card rewards immediately. Your updated GNO balance starts counting from the next snapshot period.

This means there can be a delay between adding GNO and seeing the effect on your card reward rate or weekly cap.

Why GNO benefits may not appear immediately?

Your GNO benefits may not appear immediately if:

  • your GNO was added after the latest snapshot

  • your GNO balance changed during the reward period

  • your eligible transactions have not settled yet

  • some transactions were refunded, reversed, disputed, or ineligible

  • your reward has not been calculated yet

  • your card reward payout is still being processed

Card rewards are calculated weekly. Cashback for a completed reward week is paid during the following week, usually on Tuesday.

How card rewards are paid?

Gnosis Card rewards are paid in gCRC. Your reward is sent to your primary Gnosis App wallet. It is not sent to your card balance, bank account, external wallet, or merchant account.

The final reward amount depends on eligible spending, settled transactions, your reward rate, your weekly cap, and your applicable GNO balance.

GNO and the G NFT bonus?

GNO holdings and the G NFT bonus are separate reward factors. Holding GNO can increase your card reward rate and weekly reward cap. Holding the G NFT may unlock an additional card reward bonus if your account meets the applicable eligibility requirements.

If both apply to your account, your final reward may depend on your eligible GNO balance, G NFT status, card reward eligibility, and weekly cap.

Buying GNO through the Gnosis App Shop?

Eligible users may be able to use gCRC in the Gnosis App Shop to purchase GNO through available marketplace offers. Shop offers can have changing rates, limits, eligibility requirements, and available capacity. Always review the offer details inside Gnosis App before confirming a transaction.

Not every user may see the same offers, and available offers can change over time.

Moving GNO between your own wallets?

If you already hold GNO in a wallet that counts toward your Gnosis App reward calculation, you may not need to buy more GNO just to activate benefits. Before moving GNO, make sure you understand which wallet is being used for your Gnosis App card reward calculation and whether the move could affect the next balance snapshot.

Moving assets between wallets may involve network fees and can affect when your balance is recognized.

Common GNO benefit questions

I added GNO but my rewards did not increase

Your GNO may have been added after the latest weekly snapshot. If so, it may start counting from the next snapshot period. Your rewards may also stay the same if your eligible spending, weekly cap, transaction eligibility, or settled transaction volume did not change.

I held GNO but received less than expected

Your reward may be lower than expected if some card transactions were pending, refunded, reversed, disputed, ineligible, or outside the weekly reward period. Your reward may also be limited by your weekly cap.

I moved GNO and my benefits changed

Your GNO benefits depend on the eligible GNO balance used for the reward calculation. If you move GNO before or during a snapshot period, it may affect how your balance is counted.

I have GNO but no card rewards

GNO only affects Gnosis Card rewards if you have an active Gnosis Card and eligible card transactions. Holding GNO alone does not create card rewards without eligible card spending.

I expected rewards immediately after buying GNO

GNO benefits are based on weekly balance snapshots. Newly added GNO may only affect your card reward rate or cap from the next snapshot period.

Risks and limitations

GNO is a crypto asset and its value can go up or down. Holding GNO can affect your card reward rate and weekly cap, but it does not guarantee a fixed return, a profit, or a specific reward amount.

Card rewards also depend on eligible spending, settled transactions, weekly reward rules, and reward program conditions. Some transactions may not qualify for card rewards even if you hold GNO.
